OUR MISSION

OUR MISSION
Cheektowaga Citizens Coalition Inc. John C. Stonefield president

Five residents started Cheektowaga Citizen¹s Coalition during a neighborhood meeting in a resident¹s garage. The coalition has since expanded and conducts community health surveys and raises awareness of environmental health issues in the community. Their goal is to preserve open and green space for children and insure that the air that they breathe is as clean as the air that other children breathe.

A child at play should be safe no matter where they live.

Bucket Brigades Swing Into Action

  • In Norco La., when residents smell or see things out of the ordinary from the Shell plant - close enough to spit on, for many of them - the Bucket Brigade swings into action.   Thanks largely to the brigades, in 2002, Shell agreed to buy out the four streets of fence-line properties and gave families money to relocate.

  • In Buffalo N.Y., the Cheektowaga Citizens Coalition bucket brigade discovered levels of hydrogen sulfide 72.7 times above state guidelines near Buffalo Crushed Stone quarry.  As a result, in March 2004 the state ordered the quarry to shut down the water discharge process responsible for the emissions.

  • The Kandid Coalition bucket brigade from Rochester N.Y. found levels of acrylonitrile around the neighboring Eastman Kodak plant 1,000 times above state guidelines in November 2003. The Coalition is using the information to call for an investigation of the emissions and for better air monitoring around the plant.
